Get to the beach

I have been working on a large beach commission painting these past several weeks and I love how it turned out! It was a new challenge for me to add people into the paintings that I tried really hard to make recognizable. Take a look through some of the before pictures and how the final painting turned out. Enjoy!

Drawing with the Right side of your brain

I have been working through the book "Drawing with the right side of you brain" by Betty Edwards. I started this book in 2017 and finished it this year. I highly recommend the book if you are looking for something new and interesting to do. It teaches a lot of good techniques for how to shift your focus. In the book there is an assignment to create a self portrait before and after reading the book. I have attached a picture of my before and after drawings below. I was very surprised when I looked back at my original drawing after finishing the book!

The Letter

My brother sent me a letter. It is not very common to send letters nowadays. We live in a very quick pace world with instant everything. It is nice to get a handwritten letter, or in this case a letter typed on a typewriter, sent in an envelope in the mail. There are three main themes to the letter summed up by this quote,
"A machine that mines its whole life, cripples revenge, not that I am worried about that"
I created three paintings shown below inspired by this letter. The meaning of the letter I am still not sure about, but I did very much enjoy thinking about it. What I have in my paintings is one interpretation, my current interpretation. He also created a music piece inspired by this letter. This piece was performed in October as part of the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music. I have attached the link below for you to watch the performance and hear the piece. The piece is performed by Sasha Callahan on Violin, Leo Eguchi on Cello, Haruka Fuji and Chris Froh on Percussion. I really love this musical performance and piece. I wanted to share this with anyone who comes across this blog because I wanted to give you a chance to experience my brother's and my interpretation of "The Letter." I wanted you to have a chance to create your own interpretation of it's meaning off of what we built. A chance to stop, think, reflect and gain insight on a message of potentially what was or is.
Of what is to come or what we create.

One of the things I love about my commissioned work is to help people bring their memories to life, celebrate special times with their families and even be a part of making life long goals come to fruition. Some examples of my commissioned pieces this year are shown below.

This year I was able to draw coloring pages for a children's book that a mother and son wrote. The son was able to take a special part in the book by coloring in the pages. You can download a free coloring page below, just for fun!

Also, I was able to help someone raise money through an auction of one of my paintings for a charity cause that was near and dear to their hearts. See a picture of the Narcissus Hope Daffodil painting below.

And I painted a guitar for Music for More, a charity organization in Baltimore that takes used instruments and fixes them up for kids who can't afford to buy an instrument. The ones that are beyond repair they give to local artists to paint and auction off at fundraising events for the charity. Click here to find out more about music for more https://music4more.org/

This is my first exhibit of my artwork that was not done specifically in a school setting. I had my paintings on display at the Cecil County Arts Council in the main gallery March 2019. The paintings are now on display at the Elkton Maryland Library. The show is titled "Stories Behind the Paintings". Here are a few pictures of the show and a story of how my artwork has developed over the last year. Check out my facebook page for more @ArtByGinaDell

Not all who wander are lost. This quote most referenced from the poem by J.R.R. Tolkien, probably means different things to different people. However, I believe it is quite fitting to think about for this painting titled "Wanderer" To me this butterfly is part of my journey to find my own style as a painter. Which originally started by getting books to copy paintings of artists I liked, but I have learned so may techniques now I am able to combine them all to create my own unique one. I love that the arts council decided to pair this painting with "Something interesting in the gray" and "Heading North" because although I did not plan it this way when I look at the three together it shows a beautiful growth for me. I wanted to say a special thanks to Nicole Brickweg for allowing me to use her butterfly images for inspiration. She is an amazing photographer and it is definitely worth your time to check out here work as well :-)

I started painting again after my son was born 4 years ago. I thought I would share a few images of my journey as it has progressed. I was hooked when I did a sunflower painting and wine class for a girls night out which you can see pictures of below and then started painting more and more from there!

I live with my family in North East Maryland. I paint works inspired by nature. I usually don't get to painting unless the kids are in asleep.
